Benefits of Receiving a Crown
Living with a cracked, chipped, uneven, broken, or missing tooth can be damaging to both your self-confidence and oral health. When one of these dental accidents or imperfections are affecting your smile, the only thing you want is to repair your smile.
Using a dental crown, or “cap,” Dr. Rice can completely restore your damaged tooth back to its natural appearance. A crown is custom-made to match the shape, color, and size of your natural tooth and is placed over your tooth, or a dental implant, to help protect and improve its functionality.
Placing Your Dental Cap
Here at Cool Springs Laser Dentistry, our dental crowns are created with the patient’s comfort and confidence in mind. After your consultation, we’ll take x-rays of the tooth receiving the crown to ensure their sufficient surrounding bone.
In some cases, the tooth might have extensive decay, infection, or injury, and it will first need to be extracted or have root canal therapy. If it’s extracted, you’ll need to have a replacement tooth placed first, usually a dental implant, and allow the area to heal before moving forward with receiving your crown.
If your tooth is completely healthy and simply just needs to be covered with a dental cap, we will numb the area and gently reshape the tooth down so the crown can fit on top. After your new crown is made in our dental lab, we’ll ensure it matches the shape, color, and size of your natural teeth so it blends seamlessly with your smile.
Once both you and Dr. Rice see that the crown is a perfect fit, she’ll secure it on top of your tooth or dental implant. She’ll then remove any excess material used to attach the crown and you’ll leave with a completely restored and beautiful smile.
Are You a Candidate?
When you come in to discuss your smile goals with Dr. Rice and our team, we’ll be able to help determine if you’re a viable candidate for a dental crown. Generally, many of our patients who need a crown are able to receive one, but depending on their oral health, some may need additional procedures.
If you want to protect a damaged or weak tooth, you’ll be a great candidate for receiving a dental crown. Others who simply want to cover up a cosmetic imperfection are also ideal candidates for this treatment as well.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I whiten a dental crown?
A dental crown is made at a dental lab and is created to match the color of your natural teeth. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to whiten the crown itself or any other restorations. Be sure to notify one of our staff members if you’re considering a teeth whitening treatment and have restorations.
We’ll be happy to explain your options for achieving a whiter smile. If you’re interested in a teeth whitening treatment, schedule a consultation with Dr. Rice.
How much do dental crowns cost?
Generally, a crown can range from $800-$1700 but the cost varies depending on numerous factors, such as how many you need, what it’s being used for, and how much your insurance plan will cover. At your initial consultation, Dr. Rice will create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs, which will include a detailed breakdown of the cost.
What are my options if my crown has been damaged?
If your crown becomes damaged, it’s crucial that you don’t attempt to fix it yourself and contact us immediately for an appointment. Dr. Rice will assess the damage to determine whether it can be fixed or replaced with a new crown. You’ll want to avoid trying to fix it on your own as this typically causes more damage.
Can I replace gold or metal crowns with a porcelain crown?
Yes, it is possible to replace a gold or metal crown with a porcelain crown. If you want to replace your crown, schedule a consultation with Dr. Rice to discuss your options for replacing it with a natural-looking, porcelain crown. She’ll examine your current dental health and determine whether a porcelain crown is right for you.
How long do dental crowns last?
With proper care, crowns typically last between 5 to 15 years. To get the most out of your dental crown, you’ll want to brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, and rinse between meals. In addition to following a regular oral hygiene routine, you’ll want to schedule biannual checkups and professional cleanings at our Brentwood office so we can ensure all of your teeth are in the best of health.
