Quelling Kids Fear of the Dentist
It is completely normal for kids to feel anxious or fearful when visiting the dentist. Thankfully, there are things you can do to alleviate their fears. Tell your child that you scheduled an appointment for our dentist. If your child has questions, answer them simply and avoid any negativity. Complicated answers can lead to more questions that you are not prepared to answer. Leave the in-depth explanation to our pediatric dentist.
Your Child’s First Dental Appointment
Once your child has most of his or her teeth, go ahead and schedule an appointment at our Brentwood pediatric dentistry. Your child’s first appointment involves welcoming you and your child into our office and explaining the importance of good dental hygiene and oral health. We will perform a dental cleaning and check for proper jaw and tooth growth. This visit is very low stress and is designed to put your child as ease so that they will feel comfortable during future visits.
Proper brushing, flossing and rinsing is paramount in keeping your child’s teeth and gums healthy and to instill good oral hygiene habits for life. However, sometimes brushing and flossing is not enough. To help your child avoid cavities and to prevent gum disease and tooth damage, we offer several dental services, including fluoride treatments, sealants and mouth guards. Fluoride helps strengthen teeth and prevent tooth decay. Sealants prevent plaque and bacteria from building up in the crevices of your child’s teeth where it can form cavities, and mouth guards are essential for children that grind their teeth at night and prevent damage to the teeth while playing sports.
We offer fillings, crowns, braces, extractions and space maintainers for children. If your child has a cavity, fillings remove the bacteria and decay, fill the space and prevent further tooth damage and remove the possibility of gum disease.
When your child loses a baby tooth or has to have a baby tooth extracted due to excessive decay, space maintainers can hold the distance between your child’s teeth so that the adult tooth can come in and not create crowding or shift other teeth. Braces, whether clear retainer type tooth aligners or metal braces, can straighten your child’s teeth after his or her permanent teeth have come in to give them a great smile and prevent bacteria from building up in gaps or crevices where the teeth are too close.
