Intra-Oral Cameras and Dentistry . . . Seeing inside your mouth
Intra-oral cameras are one of the best diagnostic tools used in dentistry today because, for one thing, they can magnify objects 20X their normal size. The intra-oral camera, or IOC, is a small television camera attached to a hand-held wand that takes digital photos inside the mouth. It then sends the images to a computer monitor so that the patient sees what the doctor sees -- in real time and in living color. The IOC does not replace x-rays but rather complements them. For example, these cameras show pictures so detailed that they can detect minute cracks in teeth long before they become a costly problem.

At Dr. Rice’s dental office we use digital and intra-oral cameras routinely to give patients a better understanding of what treatment, if any, is needed to achieve and maintain a healthy mouth for life.

DNA Testing Confirms that Periodontal Disease is Contagious . . .
Sophisticated DNA testing has confirmed that bad germs can be passed from person to person. Husbands can give periodontal disease to their wives and vice versa.

In a study of married couples, the spouses of patients with periodontal infection had worse periodontal disease than spouses of patients without the infection.

Another study has shown that periodontal infection was found 26 times more often in children younger than three years of age if the mother tested positive for this infection. Regular checkups and cleanings are important!
