Benefits of Teeth Whitening

How You Benefit From Teeth Whitening with our Brentwood Dentist

We all know that certain food and drinks like coffee, dark colas, and wine stain the teeth. But did you know that the natural aging process causes teeth to darken over time, to a yellow, brown or gray cast? Don't worry, Dr. Rice at Cool Springs Laser Dentistry in Brentwood can help by offering teeth whitening procedures.

What Should I Do?

There are so many ways to brighten your smile, from over-the-counter teeth-whitening systems to professional treatments by a dentist. It's easy to be overwhelmed by all the choices. Patients often wonder whether they can use an over-the-counter whitening product or are they better off having a professional whitening treatment in a dentist office.

Toothpastes   are  not effective for dramatic whitening because they don't contain bleach. The mild abrasives in most toothpaste are effective at removing surface stains, and whitening toothpastes   work  a little deeper than the tooth’s surface because of the chemicals they contain. The abrasives and other chemicals achieve about one shade lighter. Peroxide-based products like whitening strips and gels are available, too, as are whitening rinses, which dentists say are less effective at whitening because they are not in contact with the teeth for very long.

Chairside Whitening

A professional in-office bleaching at your dentist’s office—called “chairside whitening”--usually provides a more dramatic result, particularly if you regularly consume colas, red wine and   coffee , or use tobacco products. The procedure is also very safe and offers fast results. Dr. Rice  uses  thicker peroxide gels that don’t seep into the enamel as much, so there are no tooth and gum sensitivity problems.

Most patients are suitable candidates for cosmetic whitening, but Dr. Rice may not recommend it if you have certain conditions. If you’ve taken tetracycline antibiotics, these drugs may affect your whitening outcome because they chemically affect the enamel. The dentist will do a thorough exam, and if you have unhealthy gums or teeth, or extensive fillings, tooth decay or cracks, the dentist may not recommend you as a candidate.
