Stiff Toothbrush vs. Soft Toothbrush

Use a Soft Toothbrush for the Best Results and Healthiest Gums

You've seen them a million times -- those toothbrush packages labeled "soft," "medium," and "hard." Do those make a difference? Hard bristles might remove more plaque, right? Not so fast. Hard bristles can create more problems than they can solve. For the best results when brushing your teeth, use brushes with soft bristles. Those work well and to remove plaque and debris when you brush properly. Brentwood dentist Kellye Rice and her staff at Cool Springs Laser Dentistry can help you with any brushing questions you have.

What Hard Bristles Do to Your Teeth and Gums

When you brush your teeth, you drag bristles across both tooth and gum surfaces. The harder, or stiffer, the bristle, the more forceful the scraping motion that bristles will make. Rather than remove plaque, a stiff bristle can scratch tooth enamel and irritate gum tissue. Even the medium bristles can do the same damage, only over a longer time. Soft bristles, however, sweep across your tooth and gum surfaces, removing debris without scratching or irritating anything. Note that you should wait a half hour after eating before brushing to protect your tooth enamel, which can weaken a bit after eating acidic foods, making it more susceptible to scratching.

You can buy harder bristles if you need household cleaning tools; the bristle stiffness is definitely good if you want something to scrub dirt off patio furniture, for example. But your teeth need a softer brush to stay in the best condition.
